Myth and the Zodiac: Archetypal Astrology Course

Kosmos Institute, Live on Zoom

C.G. Jung’s psychology is based on the idea that archetypes are the energy patterns of nature which pervade life and the psyche. These universal patterns are what we find represented in myth and religion. In the words of Joseph Campbell, “Myth is the secret opening through which the inexhaustible energies of the cosmos pour into the human cultural manifestation.”

To study myth is to access the secret opening through which we can recognize how our lives unfold along archetypal patterns and themes. It is a way of making contact with the “inexhaustible energies of the cosmos.” No symbolic art offers so profound a way of delving into this meeting place between myth and the psyche than astrology. Depicting the constellations of psychic energy as celestial archetypes or gods, our astrological birth chart is an individual portrait of the myths and transpersonal intelligences at work within us.

In this course participants will be introduced to myths of the twelve zodiac signs. Alongside the exploration of Greek myth we will also consider a series of zodiac paintings by the Dutch visionary artist Johfra.

The first two sessions will orient participants to key ideas including the cosmos and psyche paradigm, as well as the relationship between archetypes, myth and the zodiac. Beginning in week 3 each session will be devoted to two zodiac signs concluding with a final session on the astrological ages.
